So, you’re probably wondering, what is an upsell?

Upselling is an enticement for backers to purchase more, both during and after a Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign.

Below are some of the top tips for upsells.

Pitch your upsell on your crowdfunding campaign by placing the upsell in the rewards copy.

If you’re selling a special type of portable power bank, and you know backers will want multiple cables as accessories to the power bank, you’ll want to mention this in the copy of the rewards description.

you can insert text telling backers how much to add to their pledge to get the desired add-on, with copy like, “Want an extra USB-C cable? Simply add $10 to your contribution!

This way, backers will be able to take advantage of those add-ons while backing your project.

For a similar idea, you can list the upsells as secret perks on Indiegogo Campaign page, and send the upsell through your email or facebook ad campaign to retarget old audiences with a new deal.

Offer your upsell through project updates.

If you’re introducing an add-on, new accessory or upsell mid-campaign, consider using backer updates to notify your customers.

Kickstarter and Indiegogo email updates out to every backer, making this is a powerful way to pitch to those who have already backed your project.

Try adding a button to your update copy making it easy for backers to purchase, such as

  • Add to my Order
  • Share Our update on Social media

Be sure to mention what add-ons you are offering and how to add to the pledge.

Use direct messaging to promote your upsell.

Another proven strategy is to message your backers privately, promoting your add-ons and upsells in a personal way. Think of this as a friendly conversation by:

  • Thanking the backer for their support
  • Helping to bring your idea to reality
  • And then offering the add-on
  • Mention it is exclusive to Kickstarter or Indiegogo backers.
