One of the features that makes Kickstarter unique is the community tab, which is a section on each project page that shows some statistics and information about the backers of the project. The community tab can help you understand who your backers are, and where they are from.

The community tab can be useful in different ways. In this blog post, I will explain how to use the community tab effectively and efficiently to boost your campaign.
(The showcased example is sourced from our client, LiONCooler.)

How to Access the Community Tab

On the project page, you will see a menu bar with different tabs, such as campaign, updates, comments, and community. Click on the community tab to see the statistics and information about the backers of the project.

You can also access the community tab from your own dashboard if you are a creator or a backer of a project. Just go to your dashboard and click on the project name. Then click on the community tab from the menu bar.

What You Can See on the Community Tab

  • The community tab shows you some statistics and information about the backers of the project, such as:
  • The top cities backers are coming from
  • The top countries backers are coming from
  • The number of new backers that supported the project and never backed a Kickstarter project before
  • The number of returning backers who have backed at least one other project
  • The community tab is updated in real-time as new pledges come in.

How to Use the Community Tab as a Creator

  • As a creator, you can use the community tab to improve your campaign in various aspects, such as:
  • Targeting your advertisements and outreach efforts. Knowing which countries and cities backers are pledging from can help you improve the targeting of your advertisements and outreach efforts. You can use tools like Facebook Ads or Google Ads to create and run ads for your project that are tailored to your specific audience. You can also use tools to create and send newsletters or emails to your potential backers that are relevant to their location.
  • Reaching out to Kickstarter backers directly. You can use a simple trick to find and contact backers who have shown interest or enthusiasm for your project. Simply take the username of the individual whose profile you’d like to see. Then google “name site:kickstarter.com” and it will likely bring up some of their commenting activity. You can then click on their profile from the comments section. You can use this method to ask them for feedback, thank them for their support, or invite them to join your social media or mailing list.
  • Doing something special for specific backers. It certainly doesn’t hurt to know where your backers are located. At best, if you happen to live in one of those cities, you could do something special for those specific backers. But even then you’d have to wait until backers have filled out their surveys to reach out to a specific sector of backers. You can use PledgeBox to collect and manage your backer surveys and data.
  • Setting fun goals or milestones based on the statistics. It could even be interesting to set fun goals or milestones based on the statistics from the community tab, such as the number of new backers or the number of people from a certain city. You can also announce them on your updates or social media and encourage your backers to share them with their friends.
  • Ultimately, the new community tab becomes a part of your story on Kickstarter that you can use to generate more interest for your campaign. You can also use it to create your press kit or pitch journalists.
